PHOENIX (AP) – A four-day hearing has begun to decide whether Sheriff Joe Arpaio should be held in contempt of court in a racial-profiling case in Arizona.
The hearing started Tuesday in a packed courtroom that included reporters and immigrant rights activists who have tangled with Arpaio in the past.
Arpaio sat at a defense table and attentively listened to the proceedings.
He is on a witness list but did not testify at the start of the hearing.
Arpaio’s lawyer Michele Iafrate told the judge the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office that the sheriff and his staff are attempting to fix.
