CALEXICO, Calif. – A U.S. Border Patrol agent rescued a man and woman from drowning in the All-American Canal Tuesday morning.
Agents say the couple went into the water in an attempt to enter the U.S. illegally about 18 miles east of the downtown port of entry. Border Patrol Remote Video Surveillance System operators spotted the couple in the canal.
Agents say the man was pulling the woman across the canal with an inner tube as a flotation device, but they began getting sucked into a hydro-electric plant.
The officer then jumped into the water and rescued the two Mexican nationals. Officials say the agent medically evacuated the couple and determined neither one needed further medical attention.
The couple will be processed for removal from the U.S.
