CALEXICO, Calif. – The Calexico Brown Bag Coalition is focusing on giving flyers to the homeless, besides food, hoping to guide them to where they can find more help.
The coalition has been feeding the Calexico homeless now for over a year, non-stop, seven days a week. Now they’re also giving out printed flyers with information where they can find more help, such as cool centers. Co-founder Maribel Padilla said they print the flyers because the homeless don’t have computers. Padilla said there are over 100 homeless people in Calexico. They feed around 45 every evening. She said her coalition group is only about two dozen strong but they have already given out thousands of meals.
“It’s not just about feeding. We give them clothes. We give them the resources. We make them feel they’re part of the community. A lot of people just look the other way when they see them. I come, they give me hugs. They kiss me. They thank us. It’s like our little family,” Padilla said.
Over half a million people are homeless in the U.S., according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
