Calexico, Calif.-The city of Calexico didn’t let the strong wind and cloudy day ruin their Relay for Life event. It was a chance for residents there to honor cancer victims as well as recognize the survivors and ultimately raise money to help find a cure.
Like other years organizers and participants worked together to reach their Relay for Life goal in Calexico. Groups of people walked the Calexico high school track to raise money for the annual event. This year’s target was to raise more than thirty-thousand dollars. Organizers say the purpose of the event isn’t only to raise funds but to inform people about cancer.
“Everybody is enjoying themselves, everybody is out and we’re surviving and that’s what we’re here for we are here to help everyone out and to know that they are not alone.” Said Monica Munguia, Relay for Life committee member and 9 year participant.
Ten year cancer survivor and Master of Ceremony, Mario Guzman says he has participated in Relay for Life for nine years. He says a way to give back is to participate in the event. Guzman says his father and grandfather both died from cancer.
“Cancer affects people no matter what age, what country you’re from, what religion you’re from, it affects you. We have to make sure we make ourselves available for those people in making sure that they know there’s help out there,” said Guzman.
Organizers say the fundraiser will continue on through the month of August, anyone can make their donation online. They also encourage people to form teams and participate in next years event.
