CHP discusses what occurred during Tuesday’s fatal marine crash

WINTERHAVEN, Calif. – On Tuesday morning two marines who were part of MCAS Yuma’s Weapons and Tactics Instructor course were traveling near Ogilby Road in Winterhaven. A Fedex truck driven by Randall Villareal drifted towards the marines 7-ton vehicle, they swerved to avoid a head on collision but the driver lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over. The driver, who’s identity has not yet been released, died at the scene. The passenger, 20 year old Heraclio Juarez suffered lacerations to his head and right leg, California Highway Patrol described his injuries as major but says he is currently in stable condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.

The CHP says that the FedEx driver told investigators he was trying to pick up keys he dropped which is what caused him to drift towards the marine vehicle. CHP has stated he was at fault in the accident. They also say he was not under the influence of anything at the time of the crash. No charges have been brought against him at this time, the CHP says the investigation is still ongoing.
