Ducey allows same-sex couples to be adoptive, foster parents

PHOENIX (AP) – Gov. Doug Ducey is instructing a state agency to allow all legally married couples, including same-sex couples, to jointly be adoptive and foster parents.

Ducey’s move announced Wednesday night reverses the Department of Child Safety’s decision in February to stop giving same-sex couples licenses to be adoptive and foster parents.

Ducey says Arizona has 17,000 kids in state care and needs more adoptions.

The department had allowed same-sex couples to be adoptive and foster parents since November after court rulings allowed same-sex marriage in Arizona.

However, the department then halted giving licenses to same-sex parents.

The Attorney General’s Office says it had provided what it called “clarification” on adoption because the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing court rulings on same-sex marriage.
