El Centro man stabbed during robbery attempt

EL CENTRO, Calif. – A 34-year-old man is in jail for allegedly stabbing a man after trying to steal a bicycle, according to police.

A man identified as Jose Marquez approached the victim near Fifth Street and Holt Avenue.

Marquez then tried to steal the victim’s bike and stabbed him when the victim resisted.

The victim was treated at El Centro Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Marquez is in custody for assault with a deadly weapon in connection to this incident.

“The victim stated that the suspect attempted to take his bicycle. When he refused that’s when he was stabbed,” El Centro Police Sergeant John Tang said.

City of El Centro had the highest rate of violent crime in Imperial Valley in 2013, according to city-data.com.
