El Centro woman arrested on forgery charges

EL CENTRO, Calif. – An El Centro woman is behind bars for allegedly trying to use a check that had just been reported stolen to open an account in the same branch as the check’s owner.

Authorities say 30-year-old Lakisha Kinlaw tried to open an account at the Sun Community Federal Credit Union El Centro branch.

Police say she presented a $200 check on Wednesday.

The associate helping Kinlaw recognized the check as one reported stolen by a member of the credit union just two days earlier.

Police say Kinlaw wore black clothing, had a backpack and was riding a white bicycle when she went to the credit union.

A Brawley resident who suffered a similar theft said it’s a crazy situation to be in.  “You wonder what happened. Go to the bank, and all of a sudden someone else wrote it and must’ve bought about two or three hundred dollars worth of stuff. It’s one of those things that you just can’t get over and it’s hard to recover,” Robert Garcia said.

Kinlaw is currently at the Imperial County Jail and is being held on forgery charges.
