CALEXICO, Calif. – Over a hundred kids running, jumping, and having a lot of fun! That’s was happening today at the Sixth Annual Calexico’s Tots Olympics at Crummet Park.
Event organizer Sandra Tauller says the aim is to get tots outdoors early in life.
“It’s a fun activity and it’s also exercise. So we’re combining fun and exercise to get them moving outdoors,” Tauller said.
Kids ages two to six, received a free t-shirt for their Olympic efforts.
Tauller says it’s also a learning experience for parents, “One of the things we want to encourage is for parents to encourage their kids to go outside and play.”
Tauller stressed the importance of early involvement, “The earlier you start the more it will become a lifelong activity.”
Calexico resident Jesus Hernandez has a six year-old in the event. He said the event helps kids learn to socialize with the community and to know other kids their age. It also teaches parents the type of activities to have with their kids, he added. Today most parents stood or sat on the sidelines shouting encouragement to their kids, but organizers hope they put into practice what they learned at this event today.
