Ruben Chico Ramirez appeared in front of Judge Bleich at the Yuma County Superior Courthouse. He has been in custody since his arrest in February 2015. He prompted several school lockdowns in the Crane School District in Yuma, after waiving a knife near an elementary school.
In court this morning, Ramirez was set for a change of plea. When the judge asked him if he is ready to move forward in pleading guilty and accepting the state’s plea agreement, Ramirez politely declined. He went on to say that his lawyer has not provided him with evidence that he has requested to see pertaining his case. Ramirez then asked for the appointment of a new attorney and requested a trial for his case.
Judge Bleich granted his request and set the case for a trial setting hearing on January 29. A new defense attorney will appointed for Ramirez.
