SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents from the Indio Station assigned to the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a man and a woman suspected of drug smuggling in separate events this weekend.
The first incident happened Friday at approximately 11:15 a.m., when border patrol agents said a 21-year-old man approached the checkpoint driving a 2002 Chrysler Voyager.
Agents said a Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle during a pre-primary inspection. Agents referred the man to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination. After an intensive search, agents discovered 10 bundles of methamphetamine and seven bundles of cocaine hidden in the vehicle’s right rear quarter panel.
USBP said the second arrest happened Saturday at about 3:45 p.m., when a 19-year-old woman approached the checkpoint driving a 2007 blue Ford Five-Hundred.
A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle during a pre-primary inspection. Agents referred the woman to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination. After a thorough inspection, agents found 22 packages of methamphetamine stuffed inside the rocker panels of the vehicle.
The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 55.97 pounds with an estimated street value of $559,700. The cocaine had a combined weight of 18.2 pounds with an estimated street value of $291,200.
The man and woman, both United States citizens, the vehicles, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
In fiscal year 2016, El Centro Sector has seized more than 500 pounds of methamphetamine and 148 pounds of cocaine.
