CALEXICO, Calif. – President Barack Obama released his budget proposal for fiscal year 2016 and there is money destined for the Imperial County.
The budget request includes over $248 million to complete the second and final phase of the Calexico West Port of Entry. The financing for the project was uncertain even after $98 million were approved by Congress back in 2014. The second phase includes the demolition of the present entry port building and the construction of a new pedestrian processing facility. Community leaders say they have been waiting for these news for more than 10 years.
“Millions of dollars of lost revenues because of people not coming across the border and then cars idling for two to three hours,” says Reninson, “Our expectation is the backups will be half and hour, forty five minutes at the most.”
Many people agree the expansion of the port would help relieve the long lines to cross to the United States. For now the budget has been submitted to Congress for a possible revision and approval.
