Phoenix man accused of leaving baby alone to buy cigarettes

PHOENIX (AP) – A Phoenix man has been accused of child abuse for allegedly leaving his baby son home alone while he went to buy cigarettes.

Gary Eugene Andrew was ordered held without bail at his initial court appearance Monday. He doesn’t have a lawyer yet and the 1-year-old child has been removed from his custody.

Phoenix police responded to an apartment about 5 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call about a child left alone.

They say the 48-year-old Andrew pulled into the parking lot just after officers arrived.

He allegedly confirmed that his 1-year-old son was at home alone in his crib.

Officers went inside the apartment and say the diaper-clad baby appeared in good health.

Andrew reportedly told police he made a quick run to the store to pick up cigarettes.
