Police chase with bank robbery suspects ends with fatal shooting

TEMPE, Ariz. – A suspect is dead after a reported bank robbery in Avondale turned into a police chase which then ended with a fatal shooting in Tempe today. The entire incident was seen live on television.

Avondale police say two suspects jumped out of a car and were captured and another suspect drove off. Aerial footage from TV helicopters showed a black SUV traveling through residential streets across the Phoenix Metro area before being hit by several unmarked cars at an on-ramp to interstate 10. Undercover police officers fired shots at the suspect vehicle as it came to a stop. The shots were fired at the spun-out vehicle as it came to a stop along the on-ramp. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police say the robbery happened at the Credit Union West near Litchfield Road and Van Buren Street. Officials say Avondale police initiated the pursuit and Phoenix police took over, they are now leading the investigation. Authorities didn’t immediately release the name of the suspect killed or the two who were arrested.
