Residency program has first graduating class

YUMA, Ariz.-

Yuma Regional Medical Center has its first graduating class in their new family and community medicine residency program.

“Today we are celebrating the graduation of four lovely women who just completed their residency program,” says Dr. Kristina Diaz the program director for the residency. “Also,we are celebrating a monumental day at the hospital as they graduate out their first class or certified family physicians.”

Four doctors from all over the country were accepted into the residency program three years ago. Diaz says the doctors worked tirelessly during the residency, “they have been working roughly 80 hours a week with only four days off every month.”

Now, those doctors specializing in family medicine will go on to start their own practices or continue their training in fellowship programs. The doctors say their time in Yuma has been vital to their learning and feel more prepared for what is ahead. Dr. Nina Green one of the graduating residents says, “It’s been an amazing adventure so far we’ve had some amazing teachers and very welcoming people and of course working with the community has been incredible.”

However, with the new program their were some troubles for residents. Dr. Simi Dhillon, one of the graduating residents, says the program had a rough start but became better over time, “A new program always faces growing pains in the beginning. There were some challenges in figuring out how some of the logistics would work in terms of finding places to rotate, but I think ultimately the medical community here in Yuma essentially embraced us and has led us to this day.”

New residency students will arrive in July and officials say their will be 18 doctors training at YRMC. They say the program will continue to grow in the future and they hope more doctors will practice medicine in Yuma, “I would love to after my training is over I feel it would be an honor to come back to the place where first trained and to serve this community,” says Green.
