YUMA, Ariz.- Three new restaurants will be open this summer in Yuma during the slowest season for sales and visitors.
John Morales the executive director for Arizona@Work says it’s rare for three businesses to open during the summer in Yuma, “With the winter visitors leaving, and all the migrant seasonal farm workers who usually bring in a lot of money into the community this is kind of a time where things slow down. A lot of people, when it gets hot, go to some cooler climates so things usually slow down.”
Morales says the new restaurants could hurt current sales for others especially during the slow summer season. However, he says there will be more jobs and it will strengthen the local economy. “A lot of people are looking for work right now. Many are getting out of school, there are a lot of people going to college, and want a second job.”
A Hooters will open at the location where Logan’s Roadhouse used to be near Yuma Palms mall. Applications are being taken in preparation for the opening on June 27th. “It’s nice that we are replacing Logan’s which closed down with Hooters,” says Morales. “That’s usually a successful franchise where ever they set up so let’s hope that works.”
Native Grill and Wings, also known as Native New Yorker, will be opening near Yuma Palms mall on 16th street. The Arizona based restaurant chain is in the process of obtaining a liquor license from the city before opening. Morales says, “if it’s anything like the Native New Yorker that I have seen in other places it will probably be successful.”
Finally, La Resaca will be opening where the Carnivores of Yuma used to be on 3rd Avenue. They are also waiting for a liquor license approval.
Morales adds that the new businesses will have time to adjust and get ready for the busy winter season in Yuma.
