SAN LUIS, Ariz. – Before the prep soccer season even began, who would have thought that the Gila Ridge boys team would even be in the conversation of challenging for the Gila Valley section? Coming off a tough campaign last winter and going through a coaching change in the off-season wouldn’t offer too much solace for a resurgence. But, the Hawks are now making believers out of a lot of people!
Just ask San Luis. The defending section champions already lost to the Hawks at Gila Ridge earlier this season; and knowing the reputation of the Sidewinders soccer team at “The Snakepit” in San Luis, you would figure Gila Ridge would struggle at a place that the Green and White has yet to lose at this season.
None of that meant anything to the Hawks, who spent the entire contest frustrating the Sidewinders with their aggressive defense and timely offensive spurts. Forward Traybourne North proved to the be the “Man of the match” as he scored two goals, while teammate Esteban Franco contributed a goal of his own.
Perhaps what was more impressive is how the Gila Ridge defense kept San Luis’ powerful offense on neutral all night long, not giving the Sidewinders many clean looks and keeper Noe Galindo playing stellar in not allowing one ball to pass him in both halves of play.
Gila Ridge’s shocking 3-0 win not only gives San Luis their first home loss all season, but puts the Hawks in sole possession of first place in the section and in control of their own destiny with only three games remaining in the regular season.
