Shooting investigation will take weeks to complete

YUMA Ariz. – Police continue their investigation into the officer-involved shooting that left a mother of three dead.

Police and Yuma County Sheriff’s are keeping many details under wraps until the investigation is completed. Sgt. Lori Franklin with Yuma police said it could be weeks before the investigation is complete.

Right now police are breaking the investigation into three parts; the domestic abuse call deputies responded to, the aggravated assault from when police say Melissa Ventura, who was shot, attacked the deputies with a knife and the homicide when deputies fatally shot Ventura.

“Everything will be gathered, everybody will be questioned, everything will be measured and done to the best of our abilities,” says Franklin.

According to court records we obtained, Ventura is no stranger to the law. She was found guilty of attempted aggravated domestic violence that was filed in 2012 and aggravated domestic violence in 2014. It is not know if deputies involved in the shooting knew about Ventura’s past offences.

An autopsy will be done on Friday.
