Somerton Mayor resigns

SOMERTON, Ariz. – The mayor of Somerton announced his resignation at a city council meeting and Vice-Mayor, Gerardo Anaya, will fill the position until further notice.

Martin Porchas’ made the announcement Tuesday, allowing enough time for a new candidate to appear on the ballot for the Mayor of Somerton in August.

Now as former mayor, Porchas says, “When I started in city council I actually thought about being a district supervisor in the future. The current supervisor Lenore Stuart is not seeking re-election so I thought this is the perfect time.”

Porchas has been mayor since 2009 and would finish his second term in 2018. He now plans to run for District 1 County Supervisor in the upcoming elections.
