Stay safe this Labor Day weekend

It’s Labor Day Weekend and with it comes water fun.

Here are a couple tips to keep you safe this holiday weekend. The Imperial County Sheriff’s office as well as other agencies will be patrolling the river and lakes, so if you plan on drinking while boating, please designate a sober driver.

Another tip to remember is to always keep proper safety gear on board such as a life saving device, fire extinguisher, a sound device of any sort and a flag to let others know if you have someone in the water.

Sgt. Robert Benavidez said, “Safety first, there is going to be double triple amount of boaters on the water this weekend.”

Be aware of other boaters on the water. “With other vessels on the water, the waterway tends to get more narrow with sandbars, there isn’t a lot of room to maneuver, watch your speed that’s key out here.”

In the unfortunate event there is an accident Sergeant Benevides says to call 911.

Benevides said, “There’s more people, sp there will be more patrol. We hope to be in an area if someone needs us.

Always keep proper safety gear on board, one life vest for every passenger on the boat and every child under 12 needs to wear one at all times.

Although not required, it’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit on hand.

If you plan on drinking, please designate a sober driver, its required by law in Arizona and California.
