YUMA, Ariz. – When the prep baseball season began a couple of months back in the Yuma area, no one would have thought that the Section VII title would come down the final game of the season between San Luis and Yuma.
After all, the Sidewinders had dominated the Crims in recent history, besting them in the three previous games played this season; which is part of the 10 game winning streak San Luis has against them.
But, Yuma has proven to be a big surprise this season; winning big section games down the stretch that include all three of their home games over the past month.
San Luis on the other hand, was a preseason favorite; having high expectations of going deep into the state tournament before the team even played it’s first game of the spring campaign.
This David versus Goliath match-up would start out tightly contested, as both teams traded runs in the first inning. But as the game progressed, the Sidewinders would do the little things that proved to be big in the end.
San Luis would get a hit and two walks to load the bases in the second inning, before a wild pitch by Saul Marquez would allow the Sidewinders to take the 2-1 lead they would never relinquish.
San Luis would go on to take the 6-1 victory; extending it’s streak against the Crims, winning the section, and giving birth to the team’s third straight state tournament appearance.
