Two caught with illegal weapons in the desert

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. – A group of people were caught red handed in the sand dunes recreation area.

Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) Deputies say they got a call from U.S. Border Patrol agents who had spotted a man with an assault rifle near Gray Wells and Interstate 8, Tuesday morning. The man was with two other people who were eventually approached by ICSO deputies.

After an investigation, officer say they found the assault rifle along with other guns and ammo, which all turned out to be illegal.

Officers say they arrested Brian Elliot Mitchell, 25, for being in possession of an assault weapon and high capacity magazines and having a loaded weapon in the vehicle. His bail was set at $15,000.


They also arrested Kami Jean Heyes, 32, for allowing a loaded weapon in the vehicle. Heyes’ bail was set at $ 2,500.


The third person was released without charges.
