PHOENIX (AP) – A 30-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty to charges accusing her of faking cancer in 2010 in order to get Arizona to pay for her late-term abortion.
Chalice Renee Zeitner entered the plea Wednesday in Maricopa Superior Court in Phoenix.
Zeitner was arrested June 3 in Phoenix after being extradited from Georgia where she was arrested May 9 in Columbia County while living under a false name.
Zeitner faces charges of fraud, theft, forgery and taking the identity of another person or entity.
Arizona prosecutors allege Zeitner falsely told her obstetrician in March 2010 that she had cancer and that her pregnancy put her life in further danger.
According to prosecutors, Zeitner was enrolled in Arizona’s Medicaid program and the state paid for the abortion costs.
