Woman faked sister died from Leukemia, asked for donations in El Centro

EL CENTRO, Calif.  – Officers say a woman was knocking on doors in El Centro, asking for donations based on a lie that her sister died from Leukemia. The El Centro Police Department said officers responded to the 500 Block of Hamilton Sunday. The caller said a woman was knocking on doors, asking for donations to help bury her sister who died from Leukemia.

Officers found the woman, but upon following up on her story determined that it was all a lie. The reporting party said they had initially seen the scam on the Imperial Valley Exchange on Facebook.

Officers say you should be cautious about opening the door for stranger. If you have any questions or concerns about a product or plea for help, ask them to stay there while you contact local law enforcement or the Better Business Bureau to confirm their stories.

ECPD has not said if the woman is facing any charges for the attempted scam.
