Yuma celebrates Memorial Day

YUMA, Ariz.-

Yuma had many events today to honor and celebrate the countless men and women who gave their lives protecting this country.

The Yuma Jaycees held their 8th Annual Memorial Day celebration. Many were in attendance including Mayor Doug Nicholls, Arizona Senator Lynne Pancrazi and Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot.

Nicholls gave a speech saying Memorial Day is a time to celebrate and remember. The Jaycees were taking donations and will be collecting care package items to send to soldiers over seas until the end of June.

Matt Allen, the President of the Yuma Jaycees, says with Yuma being a military town it is important to remember our soldiers.

Allen says, “Yuma is a big military family. If it weren’t for our military bases both MCAS Yuma and YPG, the Army base that we have, we would not survive because everything is so dependent upon the military.”

American Legion Post 19 also held a Memorial Day celebration. There was live music, raffle prizes and barbecue for those who paid. The event was hosted by the La Femmes Cabana to raise money for local veterans group. A volunteer for the group says they raised nearly $2,000 for veterans.

Both the Yuma Jaycees and American Legion are taking donations for veterans.
