YUMA, Ariz. – “We learned about broccoli and we looked at a fly’s leg in the lab,” said Jace Campuzano, a 3rd grader at George Washington Carver Elementary School.
Students like Campuzano got to enjoy lettuce days a day early. Learning all about vegetables and how they are grown.
“We have learned a lot in lettuce days and at school and we are so happy to come here,” said Olivia Zavala, a 3rd grader at George Washington Carver Elementary School.
Students also got to learn the science behind growing vegetables.
“We’ve been working all year on our school garden. So this is a great connection between something that the community has going on as well as something we’re learning in schools,” said Andrea Sinks, a 3rd grade teacher at George Washington Carver Elementary School.
The “feastival” is being held at the University of Arizona Yuma Agriculture center this year.
The two-day event is to show appreciation to our local farmers along with providing education to the community. The Yuma agriculture industry currently provides $3 billion back into our local economy, providing 90 percent of lettuce to much of the United States.
“For two days we have family activities. We have live cooking demonstrations that go on stage. There is plenty going on out here. It’s an opportunity for folks in Yuma and our visitors to learn about what happens behind the scenes,” said Dustin Mylius, Yuma’s Visitor Bureau marketing manager.
Tickets will start at $7 a day or $10 for a two-day pass. Children 12 and under are free.
