YUMA, Ariz. – Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has confirmed that the Yuma Marine arrested for allegedly killing a 20-month-old girl has been charges with unpremeditated murder and involuntary manslaughter by culpable negligence.
Capt. Melanie Salinas, Director of Public Affairs with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, wanted to stress Lance Cpl. Jared T. Cardwell is presumed innocent until proven guilty by conviction at a court martial.
Cardwell was arrested May 22, 2015.
The 20-month-old girl died at MCAS Yuma on Tuesday, May 19. The cause of her death is still under investigation. No details were released on how the girl died, and the autopsy is still pending. Family members did share the girl appeared to have acid burns on her face.
Salinas said forensic lab testing is being included as part of the investigation.
Cardwell is in the custody of the U.S. Marine Corps.
